The Professional Development Seminar Series reflects cutting-edge topics in the field and provides an opportunity for individuals to attend recertification courses. Seminars are generally held during the academic year on Thursdays from 9 am to 4 pm. Each seminar is approved for 6 continuing education hours.
Note: Special Offering seminar hours vary and are indicated within the brochure and online.
Clinical Supervision in Addictions Treatment

The substance abuse and mental health field is constantly changing. Staff need training in an array of issues, including co-occurring disorders, working in a cost-driven world, and new legal and ethical standards and requirements. Training resources are often limited, so clinical supervision serves as the cornerstone for staff development and quality assurance.
This intensive course provides a foundation for supervision and management of personnel and fulfills the training requirements for certification in clinical supervision for the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC).
This seminar is ideal for agencies who wish to train their management staff and for all professionals seeking the required 30 hour pre-certification training.
Note: This is a convenient hybrid course format that reduces in-class hours. In addition to the in-class hours there will be an additional 6 hours of online work.
Movie Seminar Series
This year we are excited to offer a Movie Seminar Series presented by Anthony Tobia, MD.
Dr. Tobia currently holds the titles of Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Tobia has dual appointments with the Department of Psychiatry and Division of Internal Medicine.
Movies will be viewed at the start of the seminar in conjunction with a live twitter feed hosted by Dr. Tobia for Commentary and Q&A. The film will be followed by a discussion of the film and a presentation on the affects of addiction on each of the disorders featured in the film. 5 movie seminars will be offered over the course of the year.
If you sign up for all five in advance, tuition for one film will be waived. The following films will be featured:
Fee for ALL 5 movie seminars: $300.00
Fee for each individual seminar: $75.00

Each 6 hour seminar will include education materials distributed by the faculty, a light breakfast, and lunch.
Intensive Motivational Interviewing Seminar Series
Learn the Basics, apply MI to group work, and develop MI Focused Supervision skills with Stephen R. Andrew, LCSW, LADC, CCS, CGP. Stephen is a member of the International Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). He is also a MIA-STEP (supervisor) trainer and has over 100 hours of training in Motivational Interviewing. Stephen provides coaching and training domestically and internationally for social service agencies, health-care providers, substance abuse counselors, criminal justice and other groups.

Add The Power of Groups Using Motivational Interviewing to either two day seminar and get both for $250.
Attend all three seminars for $400.

Students may register online or by completing the registration form and faxing or mailing it to the Education and Training Division.
The tuition fee for seminars is $75.00 per day, which includes a light breakfast, lunch and educational materials distributed by faculty. A $25.00 non-refundable deposit per seminar should be paid at the time of registration; this deposit will be applied toward the tuition fee. Final payment is due one week prior to attendance. If you elect to mail in your registration, all checks and money orders should be made payable to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. MasterCard, Visa, and American Express are also accepted. Tuition support is available.
Funding support from New Jersey Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services enables the Education & Training Division to offer tuition remission for up to 3 seminars to a limited number of applicants who meet the following criteria:

As a university-based center, all professional development opportunities meet necessary continuing education guidelines for the state of New Jersey in addictions, social work, and education. Continuing Education Units are awarded for participation in all professional development programs. The Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies has been approved by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, as a provider of New Jersey Public Health Continuing Education Contact Hours. Recertification for CADC and LCADC is approved by The Certification Board, Inc. The Seminar Series is also approved for continuing education units by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) and the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC).
